What is Win32k.sys?
Win32k.sys is the kernel-mode driver implementing the Windows window manager and GDI subsystem. As the kernel component most directly reachable from ordinary user-mode GUI applications, it has repeatedly been the source of local privilege-escalation zero-days exploited in real-world intrusions.
Overview
CVE-2018-8589 is a privilege escalation vulnerability caused by Win32k.sys improperly handling calls from user mode. A locally authenticated attacker who runs a specially crafted application can exploit the flaw to run code in kernel mode, gaining SYSTEM-level control. Microsoft's advisory noted that the vulnerability had been exploited in targeted attacks in the wild prior to the patch being released.
Technical Details
The flaw arises from Win32k.sys's improper validation of input passed to it from user-mode callers, allowing crafted calls to corrupt kernel memory or trigger unsafe state transitions that an attacker can leverage into arbitrary code execution at kernel privilege. As with other Win32k EoP bugs, exploitation is local, requires low privileges to begin with, and is typically paired with a separate initial-access exploit that grants the attacker a starting foothold.
